The historical sanctuary of Machupicchu is situated in the North East region of the city of Cusco at 2400masl. By railway it is 112Km from Cusco to Aguas Calientes and from here 8.5Km by paved road to the Sanctuary. Machupicchu is a part of the Province of Urubamba in the Department of Cusco and covers an area of 32,592Ha. That represents 0.42% of the territory of Cusco.
All tourist activities in Peru are centred on Machupicchu with the passing of time this area came to be the symbol of life in Pre-Hispanic times for the wonder of the Andes. Its geographic location makes Machupicchu a dream, an exceptional place, comparable to the most beautiful scenery created by nature embellished by the hand of man.
The deep waters of the river Vilcanota that surround the Historic Sanctuary run into the Sacred Valley of the Inkas. Not far from here the imposing mountain of Salkantay rises above 6000masl. Its location is what makes Machupicchu more than a simple scene, with its mountain of Huayna Picchu and its marvelous forest that surround it.
The exact date of its construction is not known. Recent studies attribute Machupicchu to the Inka Pachacuti, better known as the organizer of Cusco who was also active in this area.
The archeological structures reflect the highest expression of the Inka classic style – typical 3 sided doors and the famous Intiwatana solar calendar.
