Manu National Park, with its 1,881,200Ha is one of the most important and largest tropical parks in the world. UNESCO declared Manu a World Biosphere Reserve in 1977, fours years after its formation in 1973. Here is found a rich diversity of birds with over 1000 species recognized worldwide, some 200 species of mammals and approximately 15,000 species of plants.
Because of its differing altitudes, Manu covers many types of ecosystems that increase the biological diversity enhanced by its different ecological levels. The most southerly point of the Park, called Acjanaco is 3550masl. Whose landscape is described as PAJONAL ALTO ANDINO or high Andean grassland. The vegetation in this zone is short and not very abundant; the climate is frequently cold and wet.
Descending by these PARAJES we arrive at the elfin forest with its stunted trees, cold and humid air and a diversity of flora and fauna typical to the zone. Further down, between 3000 – 1550masl it becomes the cloud forest, an ecosystem which receives a lot of rain in which we find a great number of endemic species such as the Spectacled Bear and the Cock of the Rock bird – the National bird of Peru.
Descending further we encounter Selva Alta found between Cloud Forest and the Amazon basin, with its distinctive biological diversity where we can find certain Native communities settled in the area. Finally we have the Amazon basin at around 300masl. Where Manu National Park Reserve Zone is situated, its great diversity incomparable with any other natural protected area on earth.
